Star Wars Trilogy - triangle stars?

I wonder about the triangle stars in Star Wars Trilogy (in all three revisions).

My assumption is that this is not a bug. The game was never meant for the resolution you are running it at, so it probably used simple triangles that would preform well but be hard to see at the standard resolution.

But ... triangles? I thought Model 3 was using quads (like Sega Saturn).

Model 3 can use both triangles and quads.
