While it should theoretically work by mapping appropriate buttons to 1st and 2nd gear, it doesn't because Supermodel holds the gear in place. For example, you can shift up once, but it won't let you shift up again without shifting down first (or shifting to neutral). While it is possible to play this way, it is pretty awkward.

Really? How was it implemented? Was it a lever you had to tap up or down to shift gears or were there paddle shifters behind the wheel? I didn't know this and will have to add it to my to-do list. We'll have to create a special sequential gearbox control. IIRC, Dirt Devils also used the up/down shift scheme. Was it also a sequential shifting game with more than 2 gears?

Also, was Le Mans's handling just as squirrely on the actual machine? Or is this something that only occurs in Supermodel? I find it very difficult to play.

Le Mans 24 used a gearstick to the right of the steering wheel, similar to wheels like the Logitech Driving Force Pro and Driving Force GT, for example. All selectable cars have 6 gears, though one video on YouTube shows the player using a secret car (the one you race against after the 24 hour race) which only has 5 gears.

Regarding the steering, as far as I can remember (I haven't played the actual arcade game in a while), the steering really is as "squirrelly" on an actual machine as it is on Supermodel. Any hard turns of the wheel result in a dramatic loss of speed. You really need a steering wheel in order to play it properly.
