Difference between Sega Rally 2 and DX version

Postby MDashK » Mon Jan 14, 2019 6:04 am

So, I've always wondered what are the main differences between these 2 versions of the game.
With the latest SVN of Supermodel, one is finally able to load up the DX version and check that out.
One of the things that I have noticed on the first go, was that the Desert Stage intro wallpaper, for instance, is different.
It has the 1998 year printed on it, and the track on the wallpaper has a car in it instead of just being plain dirt road.

I only loaded the rom up once, because, for some reason, the DX ROM version runs slower than it should?!? Sound is OK, and my FPS is at steady 60, but the game just runs slow for some reason...

Was wondering if someone else knows more differences or had the luck to check out this game on a live arcade cabinet to spot the major differences between versions.

Having not played it (in an arcade or on Supermodel), I only know what I could gather from the internet, but the DX version seems to actually be the original test release of the game (like the 1993 version of Daytona USA), and genuinely does run slower than the later non-DX version. I'm curious to try it out, but I'm a bit short on free time, and don't know what all I'd need to update in regards to XMLs and ROMs and such to get it working, so I've just been leaving it for when I can afford to sit down and muck around.

I did finally get a new desktop (with nothing AMD this time!) and can report that I'm not getting any slowdown with the new graphics engine and quad fixes anymore, but that's another subject entirely.

@Toshiko:

Well, the DX version might run slower than the later release, but I don't think it's meant to run at a point where 1 game second is around 3 real world seconds...
And even then, there are certain parts of some stages that for a split-second the game gets a speed boost and runs faster, I don't know if this is tied to that specific location of the stage or not, but it's weird...
I'm 100% sure it's not my PC, all other games run fine and with the speed OK, Sega Rally 2 (normal) runs OK without issue, i'm running the emulator on my GTX 950M and nVIDIA overlay confirms the 60 FPS, so it can only be something in the emulator itself.

BTW: this is happening to me on r761

The prototypes still don't load, but that's known on the other topic (they need to be patched). No rushes. :)

@Spindizzi:

I'm not really talking about the DX (deluxe) version of the hardware arcade itself, but about the DX ROM differences.

For instance, the DX version of the game has different "Loading" screens.
The Ford Escort also has a different paint job (from Repsol, orange).
In the later version, the same car has a blue paint job.
