Brake pedal is not being detected/acknowledged

Postby isamu » Tue Sep 27, 2011 2:05 am

Hey Bart or Nik:

I have a set of CST pedals for my PC, and for some reason the brake pedal is not being detected by Supermodel. I pressed B to configure it and upon trying to get the emu to detect the brake while calibrating, it doesn't and "fails" the test. Keep in mind my pedals are a separate piece of USB hardware, and the strange thing is, Supermodel recognizes the gas pedal no problem.

I think it may have something to do with the fact that my gas pedal is officially named "Z-Rotation" while the brake pedal I named "Slider"....? They are also on a different axis and unfortunately I cannot combine them. My clutch pedal is detected in Supermodel as well, under the Y axis....go figure.

Anything I can try to resolve the issue and get Supermodel to say "Hi" to my brake pedal?

Are you sure you're selecting the correct device and axis when you're calibrating the brake pedal? If you're unsure about which axis to choose, try the option '0' that lets Supermodel try and work out which axis you mean by getting you to move the pedal about.

If you can't locate the axis in this way, then I would recommend selecting each listed axis in turn for calibration. When calibrating each one, press the Shift key and pump the pedal during the calibration process and you should see a load of values outputted to the screen. If these values change as you move the pedal about then it means you've found the correct axis. Once found, recalibrate all your axes.

The name of the axis shouldn't matter and it shouldn't be necessary to have them on a combined axis either - in fact, it's better if they are not as otherwise you will not be able to brake and accelerate at the same time.

Anything I can try to resolve the issue and get Supermodel to say "Hi" to my brake pedal?

Let us know how it goes with the above suggestions and if none of these work we'll have a think about other things to try.

Cheers, Nik.

Hi Nik, no luck my friend. :( Tried all axis listed in the option, and still get the "There was an error...." message after the calibration process. Pressed and held shift, and no inputs were showing as being read. Then tried the '0' option and it still is undetected. Weird, since the pedal shows up fine under windows controller panel, and works in all my other games(Dirt 3, GRID, NFS Shift, etc). Wonder why Supermodel doesn't detect it :?

Damn, sorry to hear that :-(

I've got some ideas for other things we can try but it will require sending you a test version of Supermodel. I'm at work at the moment so not much I can do right now but I'll PM you later when I get home.

Cheers, Nik.

OK buddy! Not that big of a deal right now, I'll just use Joy2Key to convert the brake as a digital input.

Hi isamu,

I've just re-read your initial post and I think I may have misunderstood what you said the first time around. I don't know anything about the CST pedal configuration utility (I had a quick look on their website but couldn't find much) but when you say you named the brake pedal "Slider" - do you mean that you attached an arbitrary label to it, or do you mean that you changed the way it reports itself to DirectInput - ie as a slider rather than as an axis?

If you meant the latter, then this is the reason why it is not working in Supermodel as Supermodel currently does not support joystick sliders.

It would be possible to add this functionality in at some point. However, to check this is the cause of the problem I would suggest first reconfiguring the brake pedal as another axis and seeing if that makes it appear in Supermodel.

Thanks, Nik.

Hi there Nik....sorry for the late reply I just got home. To answer your question, no I didn't change the way it reports that input, but the way it reports it by default is in fact, as a slider. I don't know why Todd designed the CSTs this way, but yes it is in fact a slider while the gas pedal is an RZ Axis. Crazy right?

You mention me changing the way it reports....is this actually possible? If so, what would I need to do in order to achieve it? If it's pretty complicated I'll probably just wait until you guys add support for slider. No big deal to be honest ;)

Ah okay, that's good to know. I mean, now we know the problem we should be able to sort it out one way or another.

To be honest, I don't know. I was suggesting that it might be possible to reconfigure it with CTS's own configuration tools, but I don't know anything about their system so this is something you would have to find out.

The good news is that it should be a fairly simple job to add slider support into Supermodel at some point.

Cheers, Nik.

Good lookin' out Nik. That's good to know.

By the way quick question mate...this is unrelated but since you're a controller and DirectInput/Xinput whiz, I was wondering if you know of a way to re-assign unique IDs for USB controllers in windows 7, so that I can arrange them in the order I want? For example, in Windows Control Panel Controller menu, my shifter is listed as being the first in the list above my wheel. So any game I run, the shifter takes top priority over the wheel, and then the pedals are third in line. I want to arrange it so that my wheel is labeled as ID 1, pedals, ID 2, and shifter as ID 3, and any game or emu I run will see and acknowledge my wheel first.

I heard there might be a way to do this by editing the registry.

Anything you can tell me that would help with this mate?
