PowerPC in the arcades

Postby PowerPC300 » Sat Jul 28, 2018 7:34 pm

The sega Model 3 uses a powerPC processor (specifically a 603e or ev depending on revision) this wasn't the first time PowerPC was used for a arcade board, konami had done that for a few years with the PowerPC 403GA (a chip not designed for arcades but as a Microcontroller) powering the konami ZR107, GTI club, and Hornet. to combat the model 3, konami, with IBM, designed the cobra system, like the model 3, the main CPU is a 603e, but also uses a 403GA as a sub CPU, and for the only time, a PowerPC 604 was used as a T&L (transform and lighting) the video board is similar to a openGL board sold for IBM RS/6000 workstations. sadly, the only game that was released was fighting bujitsu. however, the cobra system was not the last system konami made that had a PPC processor, the last system released by konami that used one was the viper. konami and sega were the only companies that use PPC hardware, however, konami used the chips for much longer than sega.
Sega has made interesting hardware back in those days, the model 1, naomi, and don't forget the all custom hikaru!

Taito also released their games on PPC hardware like the PPC JC System and the Taito Type Zero for example. I didn't knew about it until I went on the System 16 webpage since a few years ago. SEGA only used the processor for the Model 3 hardware. Konami uses the CPU on mutiple PCB's for many years since the mid 90's. The Cobra wasn't very common in the arcades like the Model 3. Model 3 contains many games and the hardware last longer than the short lived Cobra hardware.
Ferraris are the most prestigious cars ever made in my opinion. There very delicate and pristine☺️.

UPDATE: fighting wu-shu is not the only game for the Konami Cobra, there was a version of racing jam for it. however, unlike the nwk-tr versions, this version has different courses and a hard drive instead of rom chips. it powers the 70' version of the game.
