SpikeOut Beginner Guide

Postby icuk7 » Fri Aug 07, 2020 12:05 pm

SpikeOut FE is one of my favourite games of all time.
I sought out the original hardware and I've now been playing it for almost 2 years, man how time flies!

The game has a very steep learning curve and at times it can be very frustrating to play, but, once you put the time into the game it evolves into a really amazing experience to play time and time again. I've 1cc the game on Normal difficulty and I'm currently challenging Hardest difficulty. The game kicks my ass on Hardest difficulty!

There are many people waiting for link-up to be incorporated into Supermodel, but, for the time being able to play single player mode is more than enough.
So whilst we are waiting for network play, a friend of mine made this beginners guide so I thought I'd share it here. It's part one in a series so please leave a like/comment on his video if you enjoyed it.

Thanks.

Cool video! Is this running on Model 3? In Supermodel, I notice that the mini map doesn't have that gold border...

I think it's on Supermodel, but Taco-san also own the original hardware too.
It's really amazing how you guys have improved things recently, it's now becoming difficult to tell what is what when watching some videos on Youtube.

Thanks for watching my videos mate. I know I'm not the best player but I enjoy playing. :D
It can be such difficult game to get into, if it wasn't for my Japanese friends I would have given up trying to complete Hardest difficulty.

Here's what SpikeOut FE looks like when played by great gamers. Link-play is awesome.

When funds allow I'm gonna buy a PCI-e card to try and capture the network data via wireshark.
I now have 3 SpikeOut FE stacks so hopefully I can try and help by capturing some useful data.

Thanks.

I think if you capture the completely raw signal it should work. I had no idea if capturing as audio would work as I had no idea about the headers or audio encoding. But now I know toslink uses S/PDIF so it's unlikely to work at all. I think any encoding would get totally lost.

But some sort of raw capture could well work, like oscilloscope style should work. We would then have to figure out the encoding + possible headers + possible CRC. But I doubt they used a very complicated format, plus we know roughly data what gets sent between the clients. From there we could translate to binary.
