The OP is me. Now, there's a few things I should explain...
1) Yes, it's my own fault for buying a Dell with a proprietory, locked down BIOS. I should have known better.
2) In spite of me saying I had found a resolution, when I cold-booted again, the problem re-occurred.
3) The problem actually was that the card was incompatible with my (I think) P38 (or was it 45?) chipset and needed a BIOS upgrade, which, of course, I couldn't get.
I ended up trading it for a GTX 260, which worked first time. The 4870x2 is a beast, but it comes with a risk. The risk is that it's supported - and I mean that in the loosest possible terms - by ATI.
I also want to know about this, I read your information and i implement the instructions step by step. I get the desired result and i hope in future you also update us.
