Supermodel on Steam Deck

Postby 2huwman » Fri May 13, 2022 2:18 am

Just got a Steam Deck and after installing Windows, my first thought was to get Daytona 2 on there! It runs smoothly but slows down somewhat at various points. I've just tried the newest build of Supermodel so it's possible it runs better on older builds. It will play Daytona 1 at full speed under RPCS3 which I would have thought would be more resource hungry than Supermodel.

Anyone else done this? Any tips for getting it to hit 60fps consistently? I've messed with the ppc frequency, but the default of 50 seems to be best. Reducing the resolution from the Steam Deck's native 1280x800 doesn't seem to help much. Does anyone know of an older build that runs faster?

Here's a quick video of it in action:

Oops - just saw the 'Supermodel on the go' thread below! Didn't come up in my search as it doesn't contain the words 'Steam Deck'! I'll give the Supermodel Assistant a try.

Can you use the -legacy3D option on Steamdeck rather than the default new3D? This got suggested to me recently for running Supermodel on an old PC and it made a massive difference.

Thanks - great suggestion @MrThunderwing - that's done the trick. 1280x800, fullscreen, widescreen, vsync, 50mhz PPC, legacy graphics engine, and it's running full speed on the Steam Deck under Windows 10. Love it!

Does the Steam Deck use a Radeon GPU? That could explain some of the slowdown. The new engine triggers a slow path on that family of GPUs.

Yes, it's got an AMD graphics card based on the 'Van Gogh' architecture, apparently. The specs are 8 RDNA 2 CUs, 1.0-1.6GHz (up to 1.6 TFlops FP32)

Here's a video of it playing Daytona 2 with the old graphics engine:

With the new graphics engine, it slows down a lot round the final corner if drifting, and also past the waterfall section. Can't detect any slowdown in these sections with the old graphics engine.

I just bought an AYA Neo 2 and installed Steam OS on it.
I use Proton 7 to run supermodel emu in Steam OS which is running perfectly like a charm.

I made a quick guide to get it running on Steam Deck. Nobody really shows how to get it working in their Videos so hopefully it helps a few people out.
