Sega Rally 2 PC on Windows 10 troubleshooting

Postby LeSpank » Sun Jul 29, 2018 10:19 am

I'm after some help from those who have the PC version Sega Rally 2 working on Windows 10. It must be possible because I see people posting videos on YouTube and talking about it on forums but no matter how many posts I've read or patch files I have tried it will not work for me.

I have the demo and the full game installed on the system and both are set to Win 98/ME compatibility. When the .exe is launched for either I get a blank white box in the corner of my monitor then the program closes. No error messages are returned.

Should the hardware settings recognise my graphics card here?

**Edit** The game is now booting in 640*480 mode only. The thing that did it for me was putting the launcher and the game exe in compatibility mode (I think, all sorts of settings were tweaked over the course of this evening).

**Edit2** And it's gone again. No idea what I did to make it work but it was only temporary whatever it was!

Sadly, I no longer remember what I did to get it to install properly and continue to launch properly after it was installed. I had a hell of a time, and none of the tutorials I followed worked. The settings I was told to use also didn't work. Problem is, I installed it back when I was on Windows 7, and have since upgraded to Windows 10. I know that the DRM the game uses is completely unsupported by Windows 10, but could still be fudged in Windows 7. Since using the no-CD patch, I can run the game fine on both my laptop and desktop, but I cannot for the life of me get dgvoodoo2 to work on my desktop, while it works just fine on my laptop.

I remember part of the problem was that installing in WIndows 98 compatibility mode absolutely did not work for me. The compatibility mode for the installed game is currently set to XP Service Pack 2, but I'm not sure if that's what I used to install it.

I still cannot get any sort of analog controls working properly, through any means (Steam drivers, Pinnacle, nothing). The closest I can get is analog input registering, but with a deadzone of literally 0. This makes menu navigation an absolute chore, as stick drift causes menus to constantly scroll up or down (left or right for car select). Once I'm in a race, I can only turn right, and analog brakes work, but I have no gas pedal.

Hi Toshiko, thats for sharing your experience with it!

The game baffles me. You said you are using XP service pack 2 for compatibility and when I run the Windows compatibility troubleshooter, that's exactly what it recommends for me. When set to that, however, the game returns a 'please run under Windows 9x' error on startup.

It was definitely working (temporarily) for me under 98/ME compatibility but no longer :x Another thing that was working but has now stopped is the 'device settings' menu. Nothing appears when you click the link from the games launcher.exe

:x :x :x :x
