Ski Champ: How does the "incline" cotrol work?

Hi all,

I've set Ski Champ up to work with my Logitech G25, and it works mostly fine, but the "incline" controls still baffle me.

I have the X axis mapped to the steering wheel, and the ski stick controls mapped to two red buttons on the wheel.

The InputSkiY axis (as well as the input_ski_up and input_ski_down controls) control the "incline" setting and can be seen working in the input test menu.
At the moment I have input_ski_up and input_ski_down mapped to the left and right silver triggers on the wheel.

However, I'm noticing absolutely no change in turning when I press any of the incline controls. It seems to be the same as when I turn with no incline controls activated.
Maybe I'm using the wrong combination? Incline idle seems to be set at 80, with minimum at 00 and maximum at ff (I think - I'm not near my machine at the moment).

Which combination is needed to trigger the sharp turns?
For example, does it only work if the swing controls are at zero and the incline also at zero (or both at full, for that matter), or do they need to be at opposite values (swing at full/incline at zero, or swing at zero/incline at full for the other direction)?

Or are the incline inputs just completely irrelevant for the emulated version?

Any help would be much appreciated! :)

Just had a look at the precursor, Sega Ski Super G, on the Model 2 emulator:
In "Super G" the "incline" feature really does help you make sharper turns, and the player character also has a very visible animation when the incline controls are being used.
Essentially it seems to have the same function as using the left and right ski poles in "Ski Champ" - amplifying the angle of the left/right turn.

But I'm still puzzled about the incline feature in Ski Champ. Is it just not properly emulated?

I just checked in the service menu with the default mappings: if I press left or right on the keyboard, the wing value changes accordingly. Likewise, incline is centered at 0x80 and when I press up it goes to 0 and down moves it up to the maximum value, 0xFF. I would say that it appears to be working. I don't see any effect in-game, though.

Thanks, that's pretty much what I thought. Nice to have it confirmed though!

It is pretty odd, though... And it does make me wonder. Maybe the sensor was carried over from the Model 2 ski game but they decided they didn't have a game play use for it.

Hi, I'm kinda late to this convo but I believe I remember that Ski Champ did have the inclining/edging when I played it many years ago. I'm pretty sure that every arcade skiing title that had foot controls had this feature within the game (Alpine Racer 1 & 2, Super Alpine Racer, Sega Ski Super G and Ski Champ). And the attract mode shows this as well. Then again, it was a long time since I played this and when I revisited it with this most excellent emulator, the swinging seemed more sensitive than I remember and more capable of making sharper turns without edging.
