Daytona USA 2 slower than before?

Postby RaptorZX3 » Fri Feb 10, 2012 10:55 pm

I remember using Supermodel v0.2a before it got updated with the mirror-thing for Daytona USA 2/Power Edition.

Before the update, i noticed a slowdown only after the "heat is back" screen, where you see the main car rolling with other cars behind, and then when it change camera, the speed is fine from now on.

But with this small update, i noticed it's a bit slower on the intro, the "main car rolling" scene is slower and the music is getting way out of sync with the whole thing now. (yes the music is supposed to go with what's happening with the intro, like most racing games from Sega!).

So hopefully the new version coming will run better.

i also updated my Nvidia drivers to Beta 290.53 and then later at 295.51 (and uninstalling PhysX 91.11.1111 to then install 91.11.1107 because the "1111" have a huge problem that make games crash)

I'm not sure which updates you're talking about, specifically. There have been few changes in the rendering code since Nik added the multi-threaded GPU support. Because these are not official release versions, the official policy is: use at your own risk :) When/if we do the 3D engine rewrite, for example, expect everything to be broken for a long time.

did you updated the v0.2a a few times without we even know about it?
i think it was a build before the multi-threaded GPU support, or the version BEFORE you fixed the problem with mirrored track in Daytona USA 2.

But yes i do understand with breaking things while it's in development. I guess it's similar to a building being constructed, or like a prototype of an electronic device (with wires and stuff not supposed to be there on the final product, but for development purposes, there are wires, removable chips and all that kind of stuff).

I don't announce every little update. Only big new features or improvements in emulation accuracy. You can read the SVN log to see what's going on. The multi-threaded GPU code was added a few weeks back by Nik. You should try disabling it in the config file:

Code: Select all
GPUMultiThreaded=0

And see if it makes a difference.

as far as i can see, it didn't make any difference to the speed (no increase, no decrease). I wrote the setting as you've put it here.

Hi RaptorZX3,

Changing this option should make a very noticeable difference if you are running the development SVN version, so are you sure you are actually doing so? By this I mean that you have checked out the source code from the SourceForge SVN repository and are compiling it for yourself?

Or are you just downloading and running the Supermodel executable that is available from the downloads page on here? This is not the same as the development version and has not changed since the 0.2a release. If this is running slower for you then it would suggest that something has changed in your setup, rather than with Supermodel itself.

If you can post your error.log and your Supermodel.ini config file on here, then that will help us to work out which version and configuration you are using. We may then be able to see what is causing the slowdown.

Cheers, Nik.

i'm running the latest release from the website. I don't have any compilation skill nor the software to do so, and i usually don't download source codes. You should compile those SVN revisions and making them available on Sourceforge...

Nothing has changed, then. The Version 0.2a executable up on the site has been the same one since the release. Any changes would be labeled with a new version number. There was a minor update to the source code zip file that I recall (some project files were added, I think) but no changes to the Supermodel code. If the performance has changed, it is the result of a change in your system configuration.

can it be due to the fact i'm using Nvidia beta drivers? Because nothing changed hardware-wise in my computer apart of the video card drivers.

Using beta drivers because i'm sick of waiting for a Release drivers since Oct.2011...

It's certainly possible. Hopefully the next version of Supermodel will be faster. I wouldn't worry about this too much -- it doesn't sound like a show-stopper for now.
