Latest Supermodel build that's a valid win32 xp application

Postby Shinobis shinpads » Sat Sep 22, 2018 5:11 am

Hi guys,

I asked this question on a thread but thought I might get more joy if I started a dedicated post. Can anyone do me a huge favour and point me in the direction of the latest user build that works with win 32? I tried one of the last downloads here and it's not a valid win32 application. The latest one I have working on my xp set up is Bart's from 2011 which has a few issues on games that some of the later builds no longer have. Any help would be so greatly appreciated, thank you.

Don't the builds that Jitterdomer posts have both the 32 and 64 bit builds included in the zip file?

Sadly all versions say that they are not valid Win32 applications when I test them, even the 86 version. It may be because I'm running on XP, but not too sure

Yes, XP support was dropped :-(, if you try to run supermodel on XP machine, then "InitializeCriticalSectionEx" error appears.
After long trying and learning how to use Visual Studio 2017, I finally compiled a xp-compatible version of Supermodel successfully. I used Windows 8.1 SDK and BuildTools v141. But the result is working on XP. If I try to use "BuildTools V141 for XP", then compile quits with too much errors.
I'm pleased to share the XP compatible version of Supermodel R862: https://www.mediafire.com/file/36acwadqx89l6jm/Supermodel0.3aR862XP.rar/file

Visual C++ Redistributable 2017 (or "2015-2019") with their APIset Stub Dll's needs to be installed.

Just out of curiosity -- what is the use case for WinXP? Why not upgrade to a more modern Windows? I haven't seen WinXP in the wild for the better part of a decade now.

Good evening,

my usage of Windows XP is up to several reasons. Newer OS's like Win7 are very resource-hungry, I encountered "out of memory" cases very often, even with Service Pack. Another example: If I want to play Microsoft's Age of Empires II on Win7, I get strange colors, unplayable. Then I have longer loading times and so on. Even worse with newer OS's like Win8 or 10. I have XP updates up to 2019, that's rather recent and I do not really have to worry about viruses, because the goal of viruses are modern OS's. I like my fast XP, it's simply better to handle.
Many people don't get inside extended PC usage and think that updates are the holy grail, that's why they use the most modern system as possible and feed the Microsoft-Money-Machine ;-) I think that's the wrong way, because XP is a very usable and fast system. Much XP support from private teams was rising in the last years, so some modern hardware is now supported (i.e. USB3 and some newer VGA cards)

In visual studio 2017 at least I think you can still target windows xp. But xp is crazy old now. I think a minimum should be windows 7. I doubt you can even get updated gpu drivers for such an old os. Windows 7 will run on a very low spec pc.

Exactly. And if you really need XP for some particularly challenging applications you could run it using a VM or hypervisor. You can purchase legitimate Win10 licenses for like $6 (just had to do it myself recently).

By all means, if you can build Supermodel on XP, go for it, but I don't think it is something we can guarantee will be supported in the long-term.
