Sound issues in Scud Race and Daytona USA 2 PE

hello there! i'm having a strange issue in both the original scud race and scud race plus, where the crash cymbal samples just seem to be missing from the sequenced attract mode music. i don't know if they're not playing at all or if they're just extremely quiet for some reason - i think i can hear them if i concentrate hard enough and turn up the volume but i think it's just my mind filling in the blanks where the crash cymbals should be. furthermore, the crew chief's radio voicelines seem to be extremely quiet as well in daytona usa 2 power edition. i can very faintly hear the short burst of radio static after each one of his lines.

i'm running manjaro linux, kernel version 6.1.12-1-MANJARO. the only argument i'm running supermodel with is -fullscreen. i've also had a friend try scud race on supermodel and the crash cymbal samples were playing for him, which makes this all the more weirder since he's also on manjaro linux, on the same kernel version. i tried both the AUR build of supermodel and i tried compiling it myself, following the directions on the github page, but nothing helped. my hdaudio chipset is the realtek ALC233. i have none of these issues when i run supermodel on windows. any help would be greatly appreciated!

One thing to try is adjusting the front/rear balance, especially in Daytona USA 2. The -balance option can be used and can range from -100 to 100 (in Supermodel.ini, the option is "Balance"). There are 2 SCSP sound processors on Model 3 and my understanding is that they drive different sets of speakers. In Daytona USA 2, one of the SCSPs handles the announcer and the other the engine noise, IIRC. So try playing with the balance and when you find a balance you like, you can update Supermodel.ini and have it applied only to daytona2 and dayto2pe by creating a new section like this:

Code: Select all
[dayto2pe]
Balance=42

[daytona2]
Balance=42

Or just:

Code: Select all
[daytona2, dayto2pe]
Balance=42

Re: Scud Race I'm not sure. I've never noticed this. Try playing with the balance to see if it helps. Try some extreme values like -100 and 100 and go from there. If that doesn't seem to help, try the legacy SCSP and let us know if that helps: -legacy-scsp

i messed with the balance option a bit and setting it to around -50 fixed my problem in daytona 2 PE, thank you! nothing seemed to help with the quiet crash cymbals in scud race, though. i tried both -new-scsp and -legacy-scsp and i tried the balance option to no avail. it can't be a corrupted romset since supermodel would just throw up the checksum error and refuse to load the game in that case.

Is there a reference YouTube video out there of the actual game and captured audio we could compare to? The SCSP emulators were not written by us so there's little we can do. But it would be useful to get confirmation that the cymbals really are muffled. Perhaps this is just how they are supposed to sound?

well, to start, i have two videos of the scud race attract mode inside the supermodel emulator:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bgIDvHHFqBk <-- this one's more recent

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jQMrp_60KUg <-- this one's of the old svn version which fixed the scsp emulation

and to prove the game really is meant to sound that way, here's a video of it running on real hardware:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iFSpmnKcQj0

notice how the crash cymbals are all nice, loud and sharp sounding.
now here's a screencap of supermodel running on my pc:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F4j6uuhRvLo

the music is much more empty-sounding with the extremely quiet crash cymbals, isn't it?

There does indeed seem to be a difference. Here's a question: how does it sound on MAME? I think MAME can run the attract mode. It *should* sound identical to Supermodel, provided it runs at an acceptable frame rate, because the MAME SCSP was ported over to Supermodel. But if it doesn't, that indicates we have a problem. If MAME sounds incorrect then it's the SCSP emulation that is to blame.
