whats wrong with the n64 version?, its close enough to the real thing inst it ????

it was a good port for its time but its not the arcade version..lol

Mame does it fine but you need a 10GHZ machine to run mame games..lol

So does Hydro Thunder definitely work, to a certain extent, in MAME then? When I try running the CHD (in MAMEUI64 0.143) it just seems to hang on a blank screen after the usual 'Press any key to continue' MAME screen.

Dude they have come a long was since the early 2000's but there is so many more great 3d Retro Games, that use other hardware, that haven't been emulated yet.

Battle Tryst
GTI Club 2
Jurassic Park 3
Planet Harriers
Rolling extreme
Rapid River
Motocross Go
Downhill Bikers
Race On
And some others that use hardware that they use, haven't been emulated yet, the good thing is, most the popular 3d Retro Games have been.

hmm I was wondering, that time when Nebula Model 2 managed to get world online connection (meaning playing online with people around the world via a command) I wonder if in the future Model 3 could be that awesome?

Hey Eric, long-time-no-see. I liked your pictures on the official Sega forum from the real Daytona speedway.

You are absolutely correct. The Dreamcast version of the game was indeed the closest version to the original arcade. The NIntendo 64 version is good but it doesn't hold the cradle next to the Dreamcast version let alone the original arcade. Unfortunately, as good the Dreamcast version is, it didn't have the same polish that made the arcade version so... refreshing.

There's actually 2 ports of Hydro Thunder to the PC. The original was by Eurocom and was on the Sold Out budget label in the UK, whereas the next one was part of Midway Arcade Treasures Deluxe Edition, which has a Starforce protection free UK DVD edition (as opposed to the multi-CD USA version).

The original version I think has one extra track but much worse sound, although the original is also much, much easier than the DC port (where time limits are extremely tight). Graphics on the DC port suffer a bit from compression and the water splash effects are a lot fainter.

Oh and I think the DC port has split screen, where the original only had network play. I think.

Midway Arcade Treasures Deluxe Edition (DVD without Starforce, CD has it boo!): http://www.amazon.co.uk/Midway-Arcade-T ... 470&sr=1-1

Though both only run at 640x480 resolution!

Incidentally that reminds me, there's 2 PC ports of San Francisco Rush too, the one on Midway Arcade Treasures Deluxe Edition (ported by Chinese developers badly with constant droning engine noise, 640x480 maximum resolution, poor sound and no fog):

Image

Then there's the PC port, originally designed to run only on Quantum3D 3Dfx cards but hacked to work on Glide wrappers, this has fog but the wrong soundtrack, some elements you shouldn't see (e.g. Golden Gate bridge over the background when it shouldn't be there) and some messed up sounds (notably a man screaming a lot when breaking or shifting gears). It also runs jerkily unless you unlock the frame rate, whereupon it runs really too fast. It's also lacking decent shadows and only one car has reflections in the windscreen!

Image

Then there's MAME, which is pretty much arcade perfect, although it needs a fast machine as emulating a 3Dfx board in software isn't cheap to do!

I'm disappointed by the way San Francisco Rush was treated as well. One of my favorite non-Sega racers. Also wish the game got some more sequels after Rush 2049. LA Rush doesn't count since it sucked.
