Scud Race Plus rom loads as Scud Race

Postby bestbumbler » Wed Jul 22, 2020 7:41 pm

Neither ROM for Scud Race Plus (scudplus.zip or scudplusa.zip) will load as Scud Race Plus. The window title is "Scud Race (Austrailia)". There's no "Plus" on the title screen or "Super Beginner" course to be selected. I tried changing things in the test menu to see if that was it with no luck.

I'm wondering if it could be the Games.xml file causing the problem? The emulator from the download page didn't come with one so the only one I could find was here: https://www.sendspace.com/file/96fnvr from another forum post.

Alternatively I found this advice from the FAQ section: https://www.supermodel3.com/FAQ.html#ScudRacePlus

Following that advice I combined the files from scudplus.zip and scudj.zip and when I tried to load the file I just got an error message. So either I don't know what I'm doing or that isn't the solution.

Thanks for any help!

Update: I hadn't noticed but the cmd window says something like "Error, multiple game roms found, loading first game "Scud Race (Australia)." I tried again combining the zip files, this time combining scud.zip and scudplusa.zip. Loading the resulting rom gives the same cmd window message and successfully loads Scud Race (Australia), regardless if I name the combined rom scud.zip or scudplusa.zip. Trying to use scudplus.zip results in a crash.

So basically, I think I need a way to get the emulator to ignore the incorrect version that's in the zip file, or otherwise I need help figuring out how to remove the incorrect versions from the zip so the emulator doesn't load them instead of the correct version.

Because I do not keep up with MAME ROM sets, I tried to make Supermodel's ROM loading fool-proof. Unfortunately, it sometimes fails badly. Basically, it is looking at each file in the zip file and looking at which game it belongs to. If there is a single complete game in there, it will load that. Parent/child ROM sets can easily get confused if both ROM sets are in there. I believe Scud Plus differs from Scud Race by the four program ROMs and possibly also the sound ROM. You can open up Games.xml and look at the definitions for these games. If you've got a single, combined zip file, I would remove the ROMs that Scud Race Plus is supposed to replace.

Thanks for the reply! I got it to work. I first tried deleting the sound rom epr-19692.21 and the program roms epr-19734.20, epr-19733.19, epr-19732.18, epr-19731.17 from scudplusa.zip, as they matched the sound and program roms from scud.zip. However, when trying to then load scudplusa.zip, I got the message that scudplusa.zip was missing epr-20092a.17, epr-20093a.18, epr-20094a.19, and epr-20095a.20. These four roms were not in scudplusa.zip, but they were in scudplus.zip. So I just pasted them from scudplus.zip into scudplusa.zip and then Scud Race Plus loaded fine.

I'm not sure if the mistake is on the romset I have or the Games.xml I have or what, but somewhere there seems to be a discrepancy between which roms are from the Scud Race Plus (Revision A) set and which are from the non-revision set. I'm still not sure which is which.
