[scud race] basic drifting guide

Postby Noohbleur » Tue Dec 24, 2019 1:42 pm

if you're new to scud race, i suggest picking the ferrari or porsche since the vehicle rotates slowly when drifting, making it more controllable.
or you could stick with the mclaren f1, since it's the fastest car and it'd be worth it getting used to it first.

*super short tutorial*

1. downshift to 2 or 3/ downshift to 2 or 3 & stop accelerating (mt) or brake & stop accelerating (at)
2. turn. your steering determines how fast you will rotate the vehicle.
3. accelerate again after reaching a certain angle.
4. countersteer to stop drifting.

=detailed drifting basics=

drifting in this game is a maneuver that allows you to attack corners at higher speed. unlike the previous game (daytona usa), the vehicles will accelerate significantly during drifting, so you may start understeering a ton
with the accelerator pedal on the floor throughout the entire corner.

to start a drift, you need to lose traction. this can be done by lifting your foot off the accelerator pedal.
if you're using automatic transmission, you might need to brake so that you can adjust your slip angle later. the dodge viper may not require braking on auto sometimes.
in manual transmission, you can downshift to 2 or 3 so that you don't lose speed as much as automatic transmission while allowing you to have better slip angle control.
also in manual transmission, you can also drift by downshifting to 2 or 3, but i don't find it efficient without lifting the accelerator pedal.

afterwards flick the wheel in the direction of the turn. be careful on how much you turn as if you turn too much, you will make the vehicle rotate so fast that it'll spin out. if you do the opposite, your vehicle will understeer unless you accelerate less.
if you have fast reaction times, you can quickly flick the car's rotation and instantly drift into the corner silky smooth.
if you have slow reaction times, you can have the car rotate slowly into the corner so that you don't risk spinning out at all.

after steering into the direction of the turn, "catch" the angle by accelerating when the vehicle rotates to whatever angle you desire. (however a degree greater than ~85+ will make you spin out)
this will lock up the slip angle, which means you can't get a greater angle by steering into the direction of the turn anymore.
if you need to adjust it for understeer, pump the accelerator or accelerate less. this will make the car rotate slowly towards the drifting direction (very noticeable with the mclaren and viper!)
if you find yourself spinning out aiming for the largest angle possible, limit yourself to a slower, more controllable angle for yourself.

again, prepare yourself to countersteer if the vehicle rotates so that you can prevent spinouts.

if you want to stop drifting, steer the car into the opposite direction it is drifting into.
note that when your tires are worn out, you'll straighten up the vehicle slower than your first lap.

=preventing mistakes=

if you happen to spin out without hitting any walls, it can mean that you have steered too much for the corner.
try steering less when you start the drift in that same corner.
also, the dodge viper and mclaren f1 rotate faster than the porsche 911 and ferrari f40, so steer less if you have slow reaction times when driving those cars.

if your gut feeling says that you are about to understeer into a wall, brake as early as you can as braking will not turn the car as much as accelerating during drifting.

spinning out is hard to recover from. sometimes you can still steer in the same direction so that the vehicle will do a 360 spin to recover. requires some luck.
also, if you do manage to fight the vehicle from spinning out, you will drift very loosely.

i don't know if i should've posted this in the masters of driving thread. if you prefer it to be moved to there, i'll later see if i can just delete this thread and move the entire post because i'm not very used to posting on this forum yet.
update: im certain i saw an x button when i first posted the thread before the replies came in, probably means i can't delete the thread now.

edit #1: added extra detail to 3rd paragraph in detailed drifting basics regarding rotation during drifting
edit #2: after horsing around in scud race again, i found out that the vehicle rotates even when accelerating if you accelerate less or pump the pedal. updated the info in paragraph 3.
edit #3: added a quickie summary of what drifting does

This might be better in the Masters of Driving thread like you mentioned, but this guide is handy! I was playing Scud Race just now, and it's very hard considering I'm pretty bad at driving games AND I'm playing with a Wii U Pro Controller.

Thanks for the guide!

Nice guide! If there's thing that comes to mind when thinking about what the key ingredient is to being good at Scud Race it's....Consistency!

Getting to the point where the car controls exactly the way you want it to every single time is a massive undertaking.
