Hey all,

I have been working for some time on a sega hikaru emulator, valkyrie. You may have seen a couple of screenshots on R.Belmont's blog[1], but there have not been any official news; so I figured I should write a status report of some sorts.

A short introduction: valkyrie is an incomplete, slow, primitive, crude and sometimes hacky sega hikaru emulator, written from scratch by reversing the few existing hikaru dumps, in my very limited spare time. Only linux is currently supported (it should be rather easy to port to windows/osx, but I can't do the porting myself, as I use linux boxes only.)

At the time of writing, valkyrie is able to run the bootrom almost fully, including the simple 3D triangle strips making up the bootrom menu. Furthermore it can display the bitmap layers used to render 2D stuff on screen: planet harriers and airtrix up reach the title screen; sega nascar arcade also shows the intro screen; brave fire fighters is trying desperately to display the title screen, but given that there are no dumps for most of the texture data, it renders garbage. So there is some promise here.

(An appetizer: the 3D intro in pharrier is actually being pushed to the GPU, the problem is that I don't know yet how to render it. I mean, valkyrie _can_ render the meshes somewhat using a canonical orthographic viewport, but I don't know how to make use of the viewport and modelview matrices uploaded by the game. At some point the game just uploads NaNs, though.)

However there is still a ton missing stuff: AICA and input emulation (I'm using an ugly hack to fake them; probably missing AICA/input IRQs are the main cause of current emulation errors), my understanding of the graphics hardware is still rather limited (I _think_ I figured out most of the GPU ISA; but many instructions are still unknown), and the exact ROM mapping of some games (sega nascar arcade, and likely podrace) is unclear.

I'll take some time in the next few weeks to fix the obvious warts in the code, and then upload a git tree to github, so that people can start looking at it and possibly contribute some man power. The ETA is likely 2-4 weeks.

The code will be licensed under the GPL2 or GPL3 (I have yet to pick one.), so it's free and open source, and yours to improve upon (or port to MAME.) :-)

Cool, I'd seen the teaser screenshots of this over on Arbee's WIP Emporium a little while ago, but didn't really know anything that was going on with Hikaru emulation. This all sounds very promising, but it sounds like we're still quite a way from anything playable yet. I can't really recall ever seeing any Hikaru games in the arcade. What's that Nasacar game like? Does it play similarly to Daytona?

If it's the NASCAR Arcade game I'm thinking off, no. Unless I remember wrong, you can get disqualified for bumping (not crashing, just draft-bumping) another car 4 or 5 times. It's more realistic than Daytona.

Ollie King is a great game! I remember it well.

Chihiro is an Xbox. I would love to see a true Model 4 arcade board. I'm sure it would be out of this world but with the power of current PC cards, it would be more cost effective to incorporate Nvidia's power cards instead of Martin Lockheeds. Who knows though other than SEGA.

I dream for VCop 3 perfectly running at home along with Namco's Time Crisis 2 and 3.

yea innit!!! :) apparently time crisis 3 fully works on pcsx2 but it requires latest directx11 plugins,high CPU munching powered "software mode" enabled and a dangerously risky speedhack preset of 6!!!!! and a computer with 4.6ghz overclocked and a nvidia geoforce 500ti series to play at full maximum speed the youtube pcsx2 team all show recordings of 60fps with overclocked 5.0ghz super extreme custom built computers :( ,,.,. even then it has fog issues so its hard to see what yer shooting ... yea time crisis 2 no ones made it past level 1 stage one, on both MAME and pcsx2.... :( its not fair really neither have been sucessfully emulated yet,.,.,.,,.?????

Time Crisis 2 runs pretty well in very recent versions of MAME - we multi-threaded the 3D rendering and it runs 60/60 with sound and music on higher-end PCs now. I don't think the gun is hooked up yet though, I'll look at it for u8 :)

time crisis 2 gun input was hooked up it plays on mameui64bit.0.145u4 it needs to go into test mode and calibrate it properly, also lightgun input needs to be assigned as mouse input tbh you probably know that :L.....
and are you talking about a new mame 145 U8 looking at because thatll be interesting cause you'll find out that after completing stage 1 area 1 the game locks up as soon as you go up the hill with the rolling barrel scene it just loops the music in 100% emulation and nothing more.....
i do hope someone looks into it and emulates the remaining chips which are causing the game to lock up because area 1 stage 1 is green in system 23 hardware check area 2 is in NG red,stage level 3 is RED NG,level 4 NG RED and level 5 is GREEN.....
in fact ill send some screen shots of the checkup now if your interested i know its not really SUPERMODEL related but oh well you seem like a admin of MAME this will be a good chance to show it off ........[img]file:///D:/A%20pictures/timecrsis.png[/img]
