Spammers

Postby Bart » Mon Oct 10, 2011 3:12 pm

Hi everyone,

I appreciate you all flagging the spam posts. It helps bring attention to them whenever Nik or I log in, allowing us to delete the posts and ban the users. I'm going to see what I can do to slow their entry. Captchas are already enabled and switching to the more sophisticated 3D text did not deter them, making me think they are semi-automated bots with users actually entering the captcha text.

Any suggestions for what I might be able to do? I think that there is an option requiring email confirmation for registration. I will investigate this later tonight.

Thank you for your patience.

Most forums require email authentication so I don't think that's unresonable.

Pretty sure also if it's not in the default forum you can get an add on for antibot questions upon sign up.

I've just gone through and deleted a few dozen user profiles. The spam bots have been registering en masse in the last few days. I've also enabled email confirmation for new users, but this is probably easily circumvented by spambots (they just have to reply). If more start registering, I will have to look into add ons for the board and may temporarily require new users to be reviewed by me (which means it'll be a few days delay between signing up and being able to post).

Please continue flagging spam. There may be many dormant spambot accounts still on the system. Most are easy to spot but some are not. There are several users who seem legitimate but have not yet posted anything.

A tip from a friend is to remove the captcha, enable PHP + mail confirmation by the user or admin via email

Would it be possible to add a rule like "a user can't make posts with URLs in it until it has made 5 non-flagged posts"?

I´m posting this just to say that there may be many users like me who doesn´t post anything because they have nothing to say but they read your forum and enjoy doing it.
