LA Machineguns, was this game good?

Postby Jiterdomer » Thu Jul 18, 2019 10:22 pm

I remember playing this about 7-8 years ago at a (now closed) Gameworks Las Vegas at The Strip, I played the hell out of this game and beat it using 3 quarters while the game set at 5 lives. Thanks to Bart and Ian for the effort on making this game emulated perfectly, I can now play this game a lot more on my PC. The graphics were cool and it's way more fast-paced than Gunblade NY, but the bad thing is that it's only 4 levels instead of 8 like in Gunblade NY. Much like Gunblade NY, the storyline is lackluster, just have two SIFAT soldiers going around West Coast trying to stop the androids from invading LA, San Francisco, and Vegas. Don't get me wrong, one of the boss forms a laser pentagram thing that shoots from a small tank before firing a missile that exposes a flashing rod towards you.

I thought LA Machineguns was excellent. That game and Gunblade NY have a more dynamic camera system compared to earlier and later mounted gun games. Also the fact I prefer those deluxe 4:3 rear projector monitors over the 16:9 DLP or LCDs used in later games (*cough* Raw Thrills *cough*). There was a third game planned, Jet Squadron, running on Naomi 2 but that sadly got cancelled especially if I prefer Gunblade NY and LA Machineguns gameplay mechanics. Wish Jet Squadron got released instead of Transformers Human Alliance.

Also, how would you compare LA Machineguns to Ocean Hunter? I can't really tell which is the superior game right now.

Ocean Hunter had vibrant underwater setting and instead of just missiles, there are enemies biting or ramming you, much like the yellow mooks in Las Vegas stage in LA, your guns are not rapid fire, you have to press both triggers to do that by yourself and release it to reload like in Terminator 2 Arcade and Alien 3: The Gun while in LA Machineguns, you only hold the trigger to fire rapidly, and lastly, that game has a good soundtrack that fits the underwater setting.

Ocean Hunter's bullets automatically reload regardless if you hold both triggers down. On the other hand, you can spam both triggers alternatively for rapid fire which requires a bit of skill and endurance (very useful during the boss segments). One other thing I should add is that Ocean Hunter requires shot placement because the shots travel quite slowly.

LA gives you 5000 point deduction of you kill a civilian, in Ocean Hunters, you lose a life. LA Machineguns had terrible voice acting for a SIFAT officer and they were talkative in segments.

LA Machineguns had a cool favorite boss like the red giant robot that can hover in the sea and the big ship that is the source of the enemy headquarters in Yosemite.
