Supermodel losing window focus (solved?)

Postby gm_matthew » Fri Oct 15, 2021 8:24 am

For some reason Supermodel seems to be losing window focus roughly five minutes after starting up, and this behaviour is consistent. It's not specific to my computer either as I tested on my mother's laptop and it does the same thing. According to a program that tracks window focus it's explorer.exe that's stealing focus, and sure enough Supermodel doesn't lose focus after five minutes if I close explorer.exe. But I haven't had any other programs lose focus five minutes after starting, so what's going on? Has anyone else experienced this?

I'm currently testing older builds of Supermodel to see if the same problem occurs; all builds back to SVN 838 lose focus.

UPDATE: Even Supermodel 0.1.1a loses focus.

UPDATE 2: I should point out that I'm running Windows 10 version 20H2. Also Supermodel does not lose focus if I go into input configuration mode.

Is it exactly 5 minutes? maybe some sort of power profile is kicking in? Does it lose focus whilst you are using it? Or if you just leave it idle

Whatever I do whether I’m actively playing, leaving it in focus but idle or having it run in the background for the first four minutes while doing something else, if Supermodel has focus at the five minute mark it always loses it (unless explorer.exe is not running).

It’s definitely the same amount of time each time; I don’t know if it’s exactly five minutes but it’s definitely in the ballpark.

xinput? or keyboard
Have you tested other opengl or sdl apps to see if they have the same issue? Maybe OS related instead of app related.

Setting input type to xinput, dinput and sdl all resulted in losing focus.

I tried running DOSBox (which also uses SDL) in OpenGL mode, and it did not lose focus. That being said, the particular build I launched was a windowed application that opens a separate console window, whereas Supermodel is a console application that opens a separate graphical window (I’m not yet sure if it makes any difference or not).

It’s probably a Windows update that is at least partially responsible, as I never had Supermodel lose focus earlier this year.

Worth checking you do have the latest update for your version of Windows 10.

https://docs.microsoft.com/en-gb/windows/release-health/release-information

I had weird problems a few moths ago. Start menu would lose focus and wouldn't be 'clickable', same with the search bar in Chrome browser.

Windows Update doesn't always seem to find the latest updates either. I had to find the latest KB article on the Windows Catalog(ue) site and install manually.

After many hours of picking apart Supermodel to try and find out why it consistently kept losing window focus five minutes in, I think I've finally figured it out (sort of).

Recently whenever I've been starting up Supermodel I tend to do so by dragging a zipped ROM file onto Supermodel.exe; a nice convenient way that doesn't involve any typing or having to create a shortcut or batch file. But then, out of curiosity I created a batch file and tried launching Supermodel from that, and this time it never lost window focus. I tried it again and got the same result.

I think that my method of starting Supermodel by dragging a ROM onto it was what was somehow causing the loss of window focus, though I have absolutely no idea why.

I've never even tried loading supermodel that way lol. I use a batch file or nuex's front end
