Question: Does anyone want step-by-step build instructions?

Postby Bart » Mon Feb 18, 2019 12:44 am

I'm thinking of putting together a tutorial, similar to the installation instructions here, to walk people through the procedures for 1) setting up the required development tools, 2) pulling the latest Supermodel source code, and 3) compiling it. Steps 2 and 3 are actually extremely simple and I expect non-developers to have no trouble with them. Step 1 is a bit ghastly and involves typing a lot of things into command lines. But... for those possessing an attention span of longer than 10 seconds and capable of following step-by-step instructions exactly (with screenshots), it's absolutely doable. And it would only need to be done one single time.

Why am I doing this given that I claim to be so busy? Well, I recently had to upgrade my GCC toolchain for an unrelated reason and thought it would be a perfect opportunity to do this. I made sure to take lots of screenshots of the entire process :) Would just need to do a write up, which I'll gladly do in the next few days if there is any interest.

I'm on it.
I haven't tried compiled Supermodel since 2011 or 2012, when the 0.2 was released. I remember having somes issues with Visual C++ Express because of some dependencies were missing, also my lack of knowlegde on coding

Do you want to be my guinea pig? :)
Do you know how to record a video of your desktop? If you're willing, it would be extremely interesting and educational for me to watch you go through the process following a draft of my instructions. The whole thing should take about an hour (it can actually be done in as little as 15-20 minutes though). We can do it without a video recording but it would be that much more useful to see where my instructions are unclear.

Sure, just let me setup my pc for Windows, becase I using Linux right now for some zabbix testing, also if you can give a list of software for installation, I can advance in the installation of it.
About the recording my screen, let me see if windows 10 can handle that with the built-in software used for the games. Once I finish the setup, I will let you know. 8-)

If you have visual studio it's pretty easy. Copy zlib and sdl into the right folders, hit f7 and you are done :p

Hey Bart, I just finished the installation of Windows on my computer, should I install the complete version of Visual Studio or with C++ express is enough for the task? :ugeek:

Yes, that compiler will work but I have never actually built Supermodel that way. I should probably give it a go. Not sure how SDL and zlib are supposed to be dropped in, though.

I use gcc. The set up procedure for gcc is significantly more complex and requires a lot of command line usage. I can provide step-by-step instructions. If you understand how to unzip and copy files around to specific folders, my instructions should be easy to follow but it's like 10x more work than Visual Studio (at first; updating and recompiling Supermodel after that is probably easier, I would argue).

Not big deal messing around with the command prompt from my side, so if you can provide the steps, I can record my screen on how to setup the GCC compiler on windows.
