I can remember watching some of the Marubaku videos ages ago. It was back in the pre-Supermodel days when I could just about get Scud Race running on MAME32 0.117 on my old PC at about 6-8fps and I wanted to remind myself what the proper arcade version looked like running at full speed. I hadn't realised at the time what amazing lap times were going on in the videos. Here's the beginner Night Course, Marabaku style, for anyone who hasn't seen it before:

It's even more impressive when you consider that this was achieved on the proper arcade machine, without the benefit of infinite credits like you get with emulation. The video descriptions here are quite interesting as well and well worth a read (despite the occasional bit of dodgy Engrish).

yeah.. they never drop below 300kph in that whole race.. and just the accelodrift.. with the steering wheel you have to be PERFECTLY precise.. i only play scud with my g27 (using paddel shifters) for that very reason..

soo i did it.. i filmed myself doing a pretty "fair" run on SCUD beggineer (day).. 2:09:99 but only a second shy to my 2:08

Ill upload the video to youtube.. I'm playing this on a Mac BTW with my faithful G27 (with no FF ) Any tips on how to "Slice" that last corner at "Marubaku Speeds?" (thats whats stopping me from getting anything below 32 seconds)

I managed to finish Scud Race's expert course (which is quickly becoming my favorite) in the top 3 a few times today using the F1 in automatic mode. My best time is 2'43''40 and I finished in 2nd place. I can't seem to overtake the Viper but I think it's possible even when in automatic. I'm using an XBox 360 pad with the default (very sensitive) settings. There's hardly any margin for error.

I totally agree. With the Racing Wheel the game is much easier and on the Mac i use the padel shifters because SCUd isnt a gear drifting game

LIke a Jedi. Use the force to move the thumb stick! Rest your thumb on it and just think about the movements I like it so much now that I'm thinking of replacing the steering wheel in my car with a USB port for my pad.

I had a go at playing Scud Race with a third party PS3 pad a little while ago on the default sensitivity level and I could barely keep the car on the track, so well done on managing to finish the expert level and with a decent position to boot. If I was going to ditch the steering wheel in my car for any sort of joystick arrangement though, it would have to be for one of the old style Afterburner arcade machine steering yokes. Those things were badass. If I could get some sort of additional Vulcan cannon add on to stick on the car bonnet, thus allowing me to reduce any driver who cuts me up to a heap of smouldering wreckage, well, that would just be peachy.
